Math Fractions Worksheets- Fractions on a Number Line

Understanding Fractions on a Number Line

Fractions can be fun and easy to learn, especially when we use a number line! A number line helps us see exactly where fractions belong and how they compare to whole numbers.

What is a Fraction?

A fraction is a way to show a part of a whole. It has two numbers:

  • The top number (numerator) tells us how many parts we have.
  • The bottom number (denominator) tells us how many equal parts make up a whole.

Example: In 1/2, the 1 is the numerator (one part), and the 2 is the denominator (the whole is split into two parts).

How to Show Fractions on a Number Line

A number line is like a long ruler with numbers in order. We can use it to show fractions by dividing the space between whole numbers into equal parts.

Steps

  1. Draw a number line with whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3…).
  2. Divide the space between each whole number into equal parts based on the denominator.
  3. Count the parts and mark where the fraction belongs!

Example: To show 1/4, divide the space between 0 and 1 into 4 equal parts. Count one part from 0, and that’s where 1/4 goes!

Why Use a Number Line?

  • Helps us see how fractions work.
  • Makes it easy to compare fractions.
  • Shows how fractions are part of whole numbers.
