Grammar Worksheets, Subject Pronouns in English

Words that take the place of a noun and are used in its place are called pronouns. Pronouns, which are very important in terms of usage places and shapes, have different varieties. According to these types, the purpose of use also differs.

Subject Pronouns

Subject pronouns are the words that take part in the subject role in the sentence. They are also known as personal pronouns. They come before the verb in the sentence, being used instead of a noun. For example, when we talk about Liam, instead of saying that Liam did this, we say ‘he’ did this. The ‘he’ here is a subject pronoun.

The subject pronouns are I, you, he, she, it, we, they and who.

Subject pronouns save us from being repetitive.

  • Olivia is a clever girl. Olivia doesn’t make silly mistakes.
  • My mom and I are having a date tomorrow. My mom and I will go to my favorite ice cream shop.

If we don’t use the subject pronouns, we would have to write sentences as in the examples above. That would be boring and frustrating. When we use the subject pronouns, it will be more convenient:

  • Olivia is a clever girl. She doesn’t make silly mistakes.
  • My mom and I are having a date tomorrow. We will go to my favorite ice cream shop.

It is clear that ‘she’ refers to Olivia, and ‘we’ refers to my mom and I.
