You can teach kids colors with lots of fun activities. Children begin learning colors during the preschool years and their ability to identify colors is considered a milestone in their cognitive development. Being able to distinguish colors helps create cognitive pathways between visual cues and words. That’s why it’s so important to build relationships with children to help them learn colors.

Teaching colors during daily activities and routine is the best way to reinforce the concept of color taught to them in kindergarten. Children have a natural interest in brightly colored objects; so many of their toys are strikingly colorful. When you show them, say, a ball, using the word “color” along with the name of the object is a good way to start. Instead of saying ‘this is red’ it would be more accurate to say ‘this is a ball and its color is red’. The same can be done with different colored balls.

It should also be noted that receptive language develops earlier than expressive language in children. They would be able to point to a specific color long before they said its name. Therefore, during the game, you can ask them to take all the pieces of the color you choose and put them together.

It helps to stick to the primary colors – red, yellow, blue, black, and white. You can add other colors later.

Spending time on each color individually is a good way to teach the concept. Having a “red week” or an “orange week” helps a lot in understanding colors over time; you can wear clothes of the same color every week, or paint everything the same color, or use toys of a certain color. Children are experiential learners; therefore, they will learn better if they are taught to explore colors with all their senses such as sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch.
