Let’s Learn About Verbs
Let’s Learn About Verbs!
Are you ready to learn something super cool today? Let’s talk about verbs — a magical part of English that helps us tell stories, ask questions, and share ideas.
So… what is a verb?
A verb is a doing word. That means it tells us what someone or something does. It can also show us what’s happening or what state something is in. Without verbs, we wouldn’t know if a dog is barking, if you are running, or if the sun is shining!
Let’s look at some fun examples:
- The cat jumps on the bed.
- I eat a sandwich.
- We play in the park.
- She is happy.
- They are sleeping.
Can you find the verbs? Yep! They are the words that show the action or the state.
(jumps, eat, play, is, and are are all verbs!)
Action Verbs
These are the most exciting verbs. They show us what someone is doing!
Some action verbs include:
- run
- sing
- dance
- draw
- swim
- shout
Try making your own sentences with action verbs.
Example: “I draw a picture.” What do you do? Maybe you jump like a kangaroo!
Helping Verbs
These are a little different. They help other verbs. That’s why they’re called helping verbs!
Some helping verbs are:
- is
- are
- was
- were
- will
- can
- has
- have
Let’s see them in action:
The helping verb works with another verb (like reading, finished, come) to make the sentence clear.
Verb Tenses
Verbs also tell us when something happens — past, present, or future.
- I walked to school. (past)
- I walk to school. (present)
- I will walk to school. (future)
The verb changes a little to show time. Cool, right?
Let’s Play a Verb Game!
Here’s a fun idea: Look around your room and say five things you see someone doing.
Example:
- Mom is cooking.
- The dog is barking.
- My brother is laughing.
- I am learning.
- The clock is ticking.
All those bold words are verbs!
Why Verbs Are Important
Every sentence needs a verb. It’s like the heart of the sentence — it keeps things moving! Whether you’re telling a story, asking a question, or just talking about your day, verbs help your words come to life.
So next time you’re writing or speaking, think about the verbs you use. Are they showing action or helping, or are they in the right tense?
You’ve just learned something awesome. Keep practicing, and soon you’ll be a verb expert!
